About D4G & the Founder: Damon Garfield
The Origins of D4G: Destined for Greatness
D4G was founded in Rochester, NY, with the mission of empowering youth through education, athletics, the arts, and mentorship. The vision for D4G began in the late 2000s with Damon Garfield’s work in the Mayor’s Office, where he led youth intervention counseling for Pathways of Peace. His outreach primarily focused on gang-affiliated and at-risk youth, many of whom were transitioning back into the community after incarceration. At the time, government funding prioritized intervention over prevention, but Damon saw the need for a more holistic approach.
Determined to create meaningful change, he launched an AAU basketball program, starting with seven teams that incorporated not only athletic development but also spiritual and moral values. This initiative provided youth with a structured and positive environment while reinforcing essential life skills. Inspired his son, Damon Garfield Jr., this work laid the foundation for what would become Destined for Greatness (D4G).
Building a Legacy Through Education, Music, and Mental Health
D4G’s first official program took place before the COVID-19 pandemic at Quad A in Rochester, where students engaged in music-driven education that measured their skills in arts, English, and mathematics. In 2021, the organization expanded with the Hoop N’ Holla summer program, which integrated music and athletics—specifically basketball—to create a unique learning experience.
Today, D4G’s focus continues to evolve with the Hip-Hop & Mental Health program, designed to serve 20 youth by blending musical expression with mental health awareness. This initiative aims to provide participants with a creative outlet while addressing emotional well-being, culminating in a full-length album that reflects their experiences and growth.
About Damon Garfield Jr.
Damon Garfield Jr. is the visionary behind the name Destined for Greatness (D4G). As a professional DJ, music educator, sound engineer, and host, his passion for music was evident from an early age. At just three years old, he received his first drum set, which sparked a lifelong love for percussion and performance. He honed his musical talents in church throughout his teenage years before pursuing higher education at North Carolina Central University, where he studied Communications.
During his time at NCCU, Damon Jr. was introduced to the renowned hip-hop historian and producer 9th Wonder, whose teachings on history and hip-hop deeply influenced his perspective. Upon returning to Rochester, he immersed himself in the world of DJing and music production, eventually co-developing an after-school program for elementary students. This program leveraged music as both an educational tool and an intervention strategy, giving young learners a positive creative outlet.
Our Commitment to the Future
D4G is dedicated to fostering educational advancement in mathematics, reading, and writing through innovative programs that integrate music, athletics, and mental health awareness. Our newest initiative, the Mental Health Prevention and Intervention program, seeks to address youth violence while strengthening social-emotional skills among Rochester’s youth.
Through mentorship, advocacy, and creative expression, D4G continues to inspire and equip the next generation with the tools they need to thrive.
